On October 15, 2013, the School District of Superior School Board approved a plan to move forward on planning and construction of a new track/field, football, soccer, and baseball complex at Superior High School. With the help of several Green Bay Packers, district personnel and community members broke ground on April 19th.
First Game
The first football game was played on August 29th, 2014 in a 31-7 win over the Merrill Bluejays with the first touchdown being a 48 yard pass from QB Nick Mehlum to WR Jake Libal. The inaugural season saw the 2014 Spartans go 9-0 in the regular season and win back-to-back home playoff games over Holmen and Ashwaubenon before losing in the state quarterfinals to the Menasha Bluejays at DC Everest.
As part of a building referendum that passed on April 5, 2016, a new softball field and tennis courts will be added to the complex on high school property. The softball field should be open in spring of 2017 and the tennis courts in fall of 2017.
In 1954, Memorial Field was built on the University of Wisconsin-Superior campus. UWS renamed the field to honor Ole Haugsrud after his death in 1976. The Superior native was known for owning the Duluth Eskimos and for helping to form the Minnesota Vikings. The field was home to both to UWS and Superior High School football until the UWS football program ended in 1992, and when SHS built the NBC Spartan Sports Complex in 2014. The field is still used today, though no longer for football.
